LIN PROJECT

LEADERSHIP IN NEGOTIATIONS

Funded by (NNO) Norwergian Nurses Organisation
PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Leaderhip In Negotiations is a project in six African countries has the overall objective that:

The National Nurses Associations will due to increased membership numbers be able to influence the rights of their members within the workplace and health policy.

In National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi, we find that to increase membership and retention is a relevant way to build a strong voice that will be able to influence change in nursing, health and social policy, professional and socio-economic standards of nurses and midwives in Malawi.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

In the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) there are reduced numbers of members on the register. This is due to mainly 2 reasons. Firstly, the leaders do not take initiative to reach out and recruit members in the branches and this is also compounded by the inadequate resources for field visiting. Secondly, there is lack of commitment and unwillingness of members to voluntarily renew membership.

When the members are not enough on the register, it leads to inadequate organisational voice to influence policy changes, generation of financial resources and weak negotiation capacity and sustainability.

  1. To recruit new members from 86% to 90% from April 2014 to February, 2015;
  2. To increase the retention of members on the register from 30% to 50% by February, 2015.
Memebership Improved and is still improving.
