NONM EMBRACES THE RETIRED NURSES PLIGHT

The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi – NONM has considered the plight of retired nurses by reducing their membership fees to K500 per month.

Previously retired nurses who are members of NONM have been paying membership fees just like any member of the nurses union.

The monthly fee for state Registered Nurses – RN cadre is K2, 700 and for Nurses and Midwife Technicians – NMT cadre is K1, 500.

The development follows recent resolutions by the NONM Board to reduce the membership subscription to suit the retired nurses’ financial status compared to those on full employment.

NONM President Mrs Dorothy Ngoma who is also a retired state Registered Nurse/Midwife said nurses have welcomed the development with appreciation.

She spoke when she sensitized retired nurses and midwives at Mzuzu Central Hospital on the new membership subscription fee.

She encouraged participants to consider doing small scale businesses on personal or group level to ensure they are able to sustain themselves and families.

“I am pleased to report that retired nurses and midwives have positively welcomed the downward revision of NONM membership fees. I am also encouraged by their positive response on the need to sustain themselves by coming together to undertake some economic activities like small scale businesses”, said Ngoma.

The retired nurses are in the meantime having their Association of Retired Nurses and Midwives which is operating under NONM as its parent organisation.
